DÄSI

About D a s i

Dasi (pronounced DAH-see) is a word derived from Sanskrit meaning "connection".

Taraka began playing guitar about 3 years ago. She also writes and sings all the songs for Dasi. She draws her inspiration for the music from a variety of sources, including indie, psychedellic, punk rock, folk, Spanish, and Indian music.

In the beginning, Michael was Dasi's percussionist, playing the tambourine, bongos, and kazoo. Today he adds spice and artistic flare to the band's songs using his keyboard, synthesizer, and bass skills.

Nimai started playing drums for the band after messing around on a friends set that was rescued from a dumpster. Finally she bought a decent set to call her own! She also plays djembe.

A Brief History

Taraka began writing songs with a friend back in Texas. When she and Nimai moved to Alachua, Florida, they began working out music on bass and guitar. They knew they needed a third member, but the horizon looked bleak. Enter Michael Collins. After witnessing a local high school battle of the bands, the future Dasi members were galvanized to form a band and get out there. Michael had no previous musical experience, but found the rhythm within playing mrdunga (an Indian percussian instrument). Our first show was at the county-wide high school Battle of the Bands (2003). The result was mind blowingly bad. We barely stole last place. Some reorganization was vital to our fledgling band.

By a simple twist of fate, a friend had this old drumset that was rescued from behind a dumpster. It was by no means complete (we ended up using a kitchen bowl for a snare drum). Nimai bonded with the drums instantly. Jesus then rewarded Michael with a keyboard, compliments of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Several bassists were tried out, then kicked out. The reinvented trio worked very hard all year and cut a demo in Nimai's bedroom. We played several house parties before winning the county wide high school Battle of the Bands 2004. We have since been busy playing out anywhere and everywhere, from art museums, to skate stations, to non-corporate libraries.
